About Steely Dan

Steely Dan is an American rock band formed in 1971 by Walter Becker (guitars, bass) and Donald Fagen (keyboards, vocals), who met as students at Bard College in New York in 1967. Taking their name from a reference in William S. Burroughs' novel Naked Lunch, the band released their debut album Can't Buy a Thrill in 1972 and went on to record seven studio albums through 1980, fusing jazz harmony, rock, R&B, and Latin influences with sardonic, literary lyrics and perfectionist studio production. Becker and Fagen retired from live performance in 1974 to work exclusively in the studio with a rotating cast of session musicians. Their 1977 album Aja won the Grammy Award for Best Engineered Recording and reached number three on the Billboard chart. After disbanding in 1981 and reuniting in 1993, their comeback album Two Against Nature won four Grammys in 2001 including Album of the Year. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in March 2001, the band has sold more than 40 million albums worldwide. Following Walter Becker's death on September 3, 2017, Fagen has continued touring under the Steely Dan name.
