Chase Field Events

Chase Field opened its doors, and retractable roof, in 1998 to welcome a new MLB expansion franchise, the Arizona Diamondbacks* to Phoenix. While the trend in the 1990s was for new baseball parks to be open-air rather than domed stadiums, the heat in Phoenix (by many accounts, the hottest major city in America) meant that this just simply would not be feasible in the summer months that fill much of the baseball season. And so the Diamondbacks opted for an air-conditioned stadium that could be closed during the hottest months of the year or in the event of torrential rain storms that affect the area from time to time. Other quirks of the new venue were driven more by fun than logic, most notable the swimming pool attached to a suite beyond the outfield fences. The first home run to be hit into the pool was clubbed by first baseman Mark Grace, a cool landmark to hold by any measure of a baseball player’s career. In 2001, in just their fourth season as an MLB team, the Diamondbacks provided the first professional sports championship in Arizona’s history (a state which, it must be said, is not exactly filled with winners...just ask fans of the Suns, Coyotes, and Cardinals) in the most dramatic possible way. Not only did the D-backs, led by ace pitcher Randy Johnson, finish first in the NL West in the regular season, but the team also went on to beat the St. Louis Cardinals and Atlanta Braves to set up a World Series showdown with none other than the all-powerful New York Yankees. The series went down to the wire in the bottom of the ninth inning of Game Seven in Arizona, in which the D-backs overturned a 2-1 deficit to win 3-2, with outfielder Luis Gonzalez hitting a championship-winning single off the Yankees’ assassin of a closer Mariano Rivera to seal the victory. Chase Field may be home to many big moments in the future, but it will be pretty hard to ever top that. Along with all regular season and playoff Diamondbacks home games, Chase Field also hosts college sports, concerts, rodeo events, and motorsports. The stadium has also been the venue of games in several editions of the World Baseball Classic (WBC). Those who arrive hungry at Chase Field will find plenty of tempting snacks, with everything from huge ballpark hotdogs to delicious tacos to BBQ on the menu. Team and event merchandise can be purchased from the many kiosks and shops at Chase Field.

*The Diamondbacks are named after the western diamondback rattlesnake, a venomous snake that is native to the state of Arizona and which is adorned with a striking diamond-shaped pattern on its back.
