Opened in 1989 and named after Lawrence Joel, a native of Winston-Salem and the first African-American Medal of Honor winner after the Spanish-American war, Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum has been the home to the Demon Deacons, the Wake Forest Men's basketball team. Interestingly, Wake Forest University in North Carolina took ownership of Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum in 2013. At about 15,000 as its official seating capacity, the Coliseum is the fifth largest indoor entertainment capacity venue in North Carolina.
