About AR Rahman

A.R. Rahman is an Indian composer, singer-songwriter, and record producer born A.S. Dileep Kumar on January 6, 1967, in Madras (now Chennai), India. After his father R.K. Shekhar, a composer and conductor, died when Rahman was nine, he began playing keyboard in studios to support his family, eventually playing in orchestras under composers including Ilaiyaraaja and joining Zakir Hussain on international tours. For the latter's score, he won two Academy Awards — Best Original Score and Best Original Song ("Jai Ho") — at the 81st Academy Awards in 2009, a Golden Globe, and two Grammy Awards, becoming the first South Asian to win two Oscars in a single year. He has sold over 150 million records worldwide and received India's Padma Shri (2000) and Padma Bhushan (2010).
