The Mint Julep Jazz Band is an American swing and hot jazz ensemble based in Durham, North Carolina, conceived in the fall of 2011 to serve the thriving swing dance community of the Triangle area — Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill. The band draws its musicians from educators and former students of North Carolina's university jazz programs, and is led by trombonist Lucian Cobb and vocalist and swing DJ Laura Windley. With a "little big band" lineup of four horns — trombone, trumpet, alto saxophone and clarinet, and tenor saxophone and clarinet — backed by a three-piece rhythm section of guitar, string bass, and drums, plus vocalist, the band recreates the hot jazz sounds of the late 1920s, 1930s, and early 1940s through arrangements drawn from original Jazz Age and Swing Era recordings, with a focus on music from the 1930s. In 2012 the band was discovered at a wedding and recorded an original song for Sesame Street, which aired on April 18, 2013 in an episode featuring Jon Hamm. In 2016 they performed at Lincoln Center as part of the Midsummer Night Swing concert series. Their discography includes Durham on Saturday Night, Battle Axe, and Watch the Birdie (released October 31, 2022). Critic Michael Steinman of Jazz Lives wrote that the band sounds as though they "would have had a good time making the dancers sweat and glow at the Savoy or the Renny," and the band tours nationally for Lindy Hop and Balboa events from Los Angeles to New York.
