Sloppy Jane is an American avant-garde rock band founded in Los Angeles in 2009 by Haley Dahl, who was born in New York City in 1995 and raised in Los Angeles. Dahl formed the band at age fifteen and has led it through a series of radical sonic reinventions, from its origins as a punk trio to its current incarnation as a large-ensemble chamber pop project. The band's early lineup included Phoebe Bridgers on bass. Sloppy Jane released their debut album Willow in 2018 and broke through to wider recognition with their second studio album Madison, released on November 5, 2021, via Saddest Factory Records, the label owned by former member Phoebe Bridgers. Madison was recorded over two weeks in West Virginia's Lost World Caverns, approximately 200 feet underground, with a 21-piece ensemble including strings, horns, and choir, harnessing the cave's natural reverb for an immersive sound. The album received a 7.5 from Pitchfork. In 2024, Sloppy Jane contributed the song "Claw Machine," featuring Phoebe Bridgers, to the A24 film I Saw the TV Glow, in which Dahl and Bridgers also appear onscreen as performers. Dahl is known for her eccentric performance art and theatrical stage presence, and the band is currently based in Brooklyn, New York.
