The Virginia Symphony Orchestra (VSO) is a professional American orchestra based in Norfolk, Virginia, serving the Hampton Roads metropolitan region of southeastern Virginia. Founded in 1920 — with its first concert performed on April 21, 1921 — the VSO was originally the only American orchestra between Baltimore and Atlanta. The orchestra assumed its present form in 1979 through the merger of the Norfolk Symphony, the Peninsula Symphony Orchestra, and the Virginia Beach Pops Symphony. A member of ICSOM (International Conference of Symphony and Opera Musicians), the VSO employs 76 musicians over a 42-week season and is supported by a volunteer chorus of over 100 members.
