About Sue Foley

Sue Foley is a Canadian blues guitarist, singer, and songwriter born on March 29, 1968, in Ottawa, Ontario. She began playing guitar at age thirteen, drawn to the blues through the Rolling Stones, and was performing professionally by sixteen. After graduating from Ottawa's Fisher Park High School, she relocated to Vancouver, where she formed the Sue Foley Band and toured Canada before joining harmonica player Mark Hummel on North American and European dates. In 1990 she came to the attention of Clifford Antone, relocated to Austin, Texas, and recorded her debut album Young Girl Blues (1992) for Antone's Records — the label and club that helped launch Stevie Ray Vaughan. Known for her signature pink paisley Fender Telecaster, she blends fiery Texas blues with delicate fingerstyle technique. A five-time Blues Music Award winner for Traditional Blues Female Artist (2020–2025), she also holds a Juno Award, seventeen Maple Blues Awards, and a PhD in Musicology from York University. Her 2024 album One Guitar Woman: A Tribute to the Female Pioneers of Guitar earned a Grammy nomination for Best Traditional Blues Album.
