Hieroglyphics — also known as the Hieroglyphics Crew or Hiero — is an American underground hip-hop collective founded in Oakland, California in the early 1990s by rapper Del the Funky Homosapien (born Teren Delvon Jones, a first cousin of Ice Cube). The collective consists of Del, rappers Casual and Pep Love, producer/manager Domino, DJ Toure, and all four members of Souls of Mischief — A-Plus, Opio, Phesto, and Tajai — most of whom have known each other since high school. Their signature logo — a three-eyed, straight-lipped face representing the Mayan numeral for 8 — was designed by Del and became ubiquitous at rap shows, record stores, and college radio stations. Del's major-label debut I Wish My Brother George Was Here (1991) and the landmark No Need for Alarm (1993) introduced the collective to wider audiences, and Souls of Mischief's debut 93 'til Infinity (1993) — anchored by the jazz-inflected classic single of the same name — is considered one of the defining albums of hip-hop's golden age. After all members were dropped from their respective major labels by the mid-1990s, they founded the independent Hieroglyphics Imperium label in 1995 — becoming one of the first music groups to establish a website that same year — and released the critically acclaimed collective debut 3rd Eye Vision in 1998, followed by Full Circle (2003) and The Kitchen (2013). They established Hiero Day, an annual Oakland music festival held on September 3rd, in 2012.
