Smino is an American rapper, singer, and songwriter born Christopher Smith Jr. on October 2, 1991, in St. Louis, Missouri, into a deeply musical family — his father played keys, his mother sang, and his grandfather played bass guitar for Blues Hall of Fame musician Muddy Waters. At age seven his father gave him a drum kit, which he played in his church band, and he began rapping around the same time. He graduated from Hazelwood Central High School in 2010 and moved to Chicago to attend Columbia College Chicago under the wing of his cousin, singer Drea Smith. In Chicago he formed the music collective Zero Fatigue with producer Monte Booker, rapper Jay2, and singer Ravyn Lenae, and released debut EPs S!Ck S!Ck S!Ck and blkjuptr in 2015. His debut album blkswn (March 14, 2017) earned widespread critical acclaim, and his second album NØIR (November 8, 2018) marked his first appearance on the Billboard charts. He is also one-third of the hip-hop supergroup Ghetto Sage with Saba and Noname. His third album Luv 4 Rent (2022) featured collaborations with Doechii and J. Cole, and his fourth album Maybe in Nirvana (December 6, 2024) — his first independently released — featured Bun B, Ravyn Lenae, and Thundercat.
