The Toronto Blue Jays were the second MLB baseball franchise to be founded outside the United States when they joined the American League in 1977 as an expansion team in Toronto, Canada’s largest city. The choice of a blue bird as their namesake and logo proved a hit, aided in part by the team’s similar blue colors to the city’s two professional teams, the NHL’s Toronto Maple Leafs, and CFL’s Toronto Argonauts. The Blue Jays are now the only MLB team remaining in Canada (following the departure of the Montreal Expos, who are now the Washington Nationals). The team from Toronto is also the only Canadian team (and non-American team) ever to win the World Series, a feat that the Blue Jays accomplished twice in back-to-back seasons (1992, 1993). The 1993 World Series had one of the most dramatic endings in baseball history, thanks to Joe Carter hitting a game-winning walk-off home run in the ninth inning in Game Six in front of 50,000 blue-clad fans at Skydome (now Rogers Centre). Carter’s home run remains one of Canada’s most iconic sporting moments, almost everyone in the country remembers where they were when it happened.
