Capacity: 20,000
Home Teams: D.C. United (MLS)
Audi Field was built in 2018 in Washington, D.C. (15 minutes drive from the White House) to provide a new home for D.C. United. As one of the founding teams in 1996 and first dominant powers of the MLS, D.C. United had spent its first two decades playing in the aging Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium, an aging multi-purpose stadium used for professional American football and baseball at various times in its history that soccer fans found ill-suited to watching their sport. Audi Field was therefore a breath of fresh air for the franchise, providing a soccer-specific stadium of the right size to fill up with devoted fans and generate a great game day atmosphere. D.C. United are known as one of the most successful teams in MLS history, having won both the MLS Cup and MLS Supporters’ Shield on 4 occasions (league records) as well as three U.S. Open Cups. That said, however, it is also true that most of the team’s honors were won in the early days of the league (the vast majority between 1996 and 1999) and since then D.C. United’s fortunes have often wavered. The team has particularly struggled in recent years, failing to qualify for the MLS Playoffs in any of the past four seasons or get past the First Round since 2015. The team’s fans remain loyal, though, with six main multilingual supporters groups (La Barra Brava, the Screaming Eagles, District Ultras, Rose Room Collective, 202 Unique, and La Banda del Distrito) filling the safe standing areas of the stadium to create much of the atmosphere in the stadium. The Latin flavor to the team’s support began in the 1990s when there were several popular players from South America. Hungry visitors at Audi Field will find no shortage of tasty snacks, with everything from Upper 90 Pizza and traditional nachos to pulled pork sandwiches and quesadillas on the menu, as well as plenty of cold beer at spots like the wonderfully named Beer Wall. For D.C. United merchandise, head to one of the venue’s many shops and kiosks.
As well as D.C. United soccer games, Audi Field is known for hosting international soccer games featuring the U.S. Men's National Soccer Team and U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team. While the venue was constructed with the idea that it could be used for large concerts by international artists on tour, this has not really materialized yet. No concerts or music festivals have been held at Audi Field yet, but keep your eyes on TicketX, as this is sure to change soon!
