Thomas Wolfe Auditorium, a horseshoe-shaped theater with a seating capacity of 2,431, was built in 1939 as part of the Works Progress Administration, marking its significance with a rich history and a renovation in 1974. Additionally, the banquet hall accommodates nearly 500 guests, catering to a variety of events. The civic center was conceptualized in 1968 to rejuvenate downtown Asheville by introducing a modern exhibition center, meeting spaces, and an arena. Over the years, it has served as the home ground for several sports teams, including the Asheville Altitude basketball team and the Asheville Smoke of the United Hockey League. Furthermore, it has been a notable venue for wrestling events, basketball tournaments, and other significant events like the commencement exercises for the University of North Carolina at Asheville, last held there in 1999.
