Capacity: 2,850
Opened: 1934
Legendary music icons like Frank Sinatra, the Beach Boys, Barbara Streisand, Bob Dylan, and the Rolling Stones have all performed in this 2,850-capacity California hall. The San Jose Civic is a popular theater and concert spot in San Jose owned by the city.
For an auditorium built in the 1930s, the San Jose Civic still maintains its beautiful look because it undergoes constant renovations. In 2007, the city approved spending $25 million on upgrading the center’s look. The upgrade was completed in 2012, and it is why the auditorium looks as radiant as it does today.
The San Jose Civic is a historic landmark to San Joseans because it has hosted many of the city’s biggest events. Big boxing matches involving top fighters like Joe Louis, Max Bear, and Jack Dempsey have been held in the civic center. In addition, different political figures have made iconic appearances here, not to mention the musical legends that have performed on its stage.
The theater is an extension on the East side of the building. It can seat only 468 people, with 368 of those seats being orchestra seats and 150 being balcony seats. The Montgomery Theater also houses America’s largest musical theater and training program for children, the Children’s Musical Theater, San Jose.
Since its opening in 1936, the Montgomery Theater has hosted many shows for the performing arts and closed corporate events.
When a notable concert hall of this caliber survives from the 1930s until now, it must be renowned enough to attract important events. In the past, the center has hosted some of San Jose’s biggest music concerts and is set to attract more big events in 2024.
