About Veterans Memorial Coliseum Portland

Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland stands as a multifaceted venue with a rich history of hosting a wide range of significant events, making it a landmark location within the city. Originally designed to accommodate the floats of the Portland Rose Festival's Grand Floral Parade, the Coliseum features large doors at both ends, showcasing its unique architectural consideration. Since 1961, it has been the venue for the Rose Festival Queen's coronation, embedding it deeply in Portland’s cultural traditions. Beyond its local significance, the Memorial Coliseum has been a stage for legendary musical performances and significant political events. Notably, it hosted The Beatles on their 1965 American Tour, drawing a crowd of 20,000 fans, an event so impactful that Allen Ginsberg penned a poem about it. The venue continued to attract major music acts, including Led Zeppelin during their North American tours in the late '60s and early '70s, The Monkees in 1967, and Elvis Presley, who performed there three times in the '70s to thousands of fans. In the realm of contemporary music, the Bee Gees performed two sold-out shows during their 1979 Spirits Having Flown Tour, and Bon Jovi recorded most of the footage for their music video "Lay Your Hands On Me" during their shows in 1989. The Coliseum has also played a significant role in politics, hosting a rally for presidential candidate Ralph Nader in 2000 that sold out 10,500 seats, and a speech by President Barack Obama in 2008 during his campaign for the Democratic Nomination.
