Charlotte Hornets

The Charlotte Hornets have existed in two separate incarnations during their time in the NBA. The team first appeared as an expansion franchise in 1988 but relocated to New Orleans in 2002. A new team returned to Charlotte in 2004, initially named the Bobcats but later reverting to the Hornets in 2014 (as the team in New Orleans had changed their name to the Pelicans). Whatever name you call them, it is fair to say that the Hornets have hardly set the league alight, particularly in the stint since 2004 in which they have only made the playoffs three times (losing in the First Round). The team’s best memories thus far were made in the 1990s, when they became regular fixtures in the NBA playoffs, advancing to the Eastern Conference Semifinals on four occasions on the backs of performances by outstanding players like power forward Larry Johnson, center Alonzo Mourning, and small forward Glen Rice. This run of relative success was interrupted by the franchise’s relocation and subsequent re-emergence as the Bobcats, who struggled to make in-roads in their 12 years under that name. The Bobcats only qualified for the playoffs twice in that time and were swept 4-0 on both occasions. The name change back to the Hornets in 2014 has not seen any semblance of success return to the team either. Their sole playoff appearance since, in 2016, ended in defeat and they have spent the years since looking up at the rest of the league from the basement levels of the Eastern Conference. Nevertheless, Charlotte Hornets fans will still be hoping to see their team, led by LaMelo Ball and P.J. Washington, spring a few surprises this season and squeak back into the postseason in 2024.
