Thomas Wesley Pentz, known by his stage names Diplo, Diplodocus, Wes Gully, and Wes Diplo, is a Philadelphia-based DJ and producer since 2003. He co-founded Hollertronix with DJ Low Budget, showcasing his eclectic mix of music. Collaborating with M.I.A., including a romantic relationship, he gained prominence. His childhood fascination with dinosaurs inspired the name Diplo, short for Diplodocus.
Diplo's DJ style is known for 80s mashups and cinematic hip hop, notably showcased in his solo album Florida. Raised in the southern U.S., he incorporates local music styles like Dirty South and Miami bass into his work. Southern Gothic literature and world music, especially baile funk from Brazil, influenced his sound.
Signed to Ninja Tune's Big Dada imprint, Diplo founded Mad Decent in 2006, signing artists like Bonde do Role. He is also one half of Major Lazer, alongside DJ Switch, formed after collaborating with M.I.A.
In 2003, Diplo dropped his first solo album, Florida, highlighting a chill vibe with catchy melodies. His 2004 mixtape, Piracy Funds Terrorism, Vol. 1, made waves by introducing M.I.A. to a broader audience. Embracing Brazilian funk carioca, he founded Mad Decent Records in 2005, signing Bonde do Role.
By 2009, Mad Decent struck a distribution deal, launching Major Lazer's debut album, Guns Don't Kill People... Lazers Do. That year, Diplo also released his remix collection, Decent Work for Decent Pay: Selected Works, Vol. 1. He continued to shine with mixed CDs, EPs, and notable collaborations like Madonna's Rebel Heart and Skrillex's Jack Ü.
His ventures into country music as Thomas Wesley and ambient sounds with MMXX further showcased his versatility. In 2022, Diplo dropped a self-titled album, flaunting diverse collaborations and cementing his status as a versatile music maven.
