Don Felder is an American guitarist, singer, and songwriter born Donald William Felder on September 21, 1947, in Gainesville, Florida — best known as lead guitarist of the Eagles from 1974 to 2001. First drawn to music after watching Elvis Presley on The Ed Sullivan Show, he acquired his first guitar at age ten by trading cherry bombs with a neighbor. A self-taught guitarist who learned by playing tapes at half speed, Felder started his first band, the Continentals, in his early teens alongside Stephen Stills; future Eagle Bernie Leadon later replaced Stills in the group, which became the Maundy Quintet. Felder learned slide guitar from Duane Allman, and a young Tom Petty was among his guitar students. After stints in New York and Boston and session work in Los Angeles — including touring with Crosby & Nash — Leadon invited him to add slide guitar to the Eagles' 1974 album On the Border; he joined as a full member shortly after. His most celebrated contribution is co-writing the music for "Hotel California" from the band's 1976 landmark album. Fired from the Eagles in 2001, legal disputes with Glenn Frey and Don Henley were settled out of court in 2007; his autobiography Heaven and Hell: My Life in the Eagles (1974–2001) followed in 2008. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the Eagles in 1998 and the Musicians Hall of Fame in 2016, Felder continues to tour and released American Rock 'n' Roll (2019), featuring Slash, Sammy Hagar, Peter Frampton, and Mick Fleetwood.
