Julian Marley is a British-Jamaican reggae musician, songwriter, producer, and humanitarian born Julian Ricardo Marley on June 4, 1975, in London — the son of Bob Marley and Barbados-born Lucy Pounder, and the only one of Bob Marley's children born and raised in the United Kingdom. Raised in England by his mother while frequently visiting Jamaica, he recorded his first demo at the Marley family home in Kingston at age five and studied under Wailers veterans including Aston "Family Man" Barrett, Earl "Chinna" Smith, Tyrone Downie, and Earl "Wire" Lindo. He formed his backing band The Uprising — named for songs he wrote in response to the 1987 murder of Wailers drummer Carlton Barrett — and joined half-brothers Ziggy and Stephen Marley in Ghetto Youth International in 1989. Debut album Lion in the Morning (1996, Tuff Gong Studios, produced by Aston Barrett and Stephen Marley) launched a global tour; in 1997 he and Damian Marley toured Lollapalooza. He played guitar on Lauryn Hill's Grammy-winning The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill (1998) and contributed to the platinum remix album Chant Down Babylon (1999). A Time and Place (2003) was produced by Stephen Marley at Miami's Lion's Den Studios; Awake (2009) earned a Grammy nomination for Best Reggae Album and IRAWMA Best Album of the Year; As I Am (2019) received another Grammy nomination. In 2008 he and The Uprising represented Jamaica at the Beijing Olympics. His collaborative album with producer Antaeus, Colors of Royal (2023), won Best Reggae Album at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards in 2024.
