Gerardo Ortiz is an American-Mexican regional Mexican singer, songwriter, and record producer born Gerardo Ortiz Medína on October 5, 1989, in Pasadena, California. Shortly after his birth his family relocated to Culiacán, Sinaloa, Mexico, where he grew up immersed in norteño and banda music. At age eight he recorded his first amateur album Encuentro de Amor and began performing at parties and festivals across northern Mexico under the nickname "Gerardito, the Son of Sinaloa." At thirteen he traveled to Mexico City to audition for Televisa's children's reality show Código F.A.M.A., reaching the finals. After returning to the United States at age twenty he signed with Del Records and released the live album En Vivo las Tundras (2009) before breaking through with his major-label studio debut Ni Hoy Ni Mañana (2010) — earning a Grammy nomination for Best Norteño Album and winning six honors at the inaugural Billboard Mexican Music Awards, including Artist of the Year. Known as one of the premier narcocorrido artists and a gifted romantic balladeer, he has accumulated more number one records in Regional Mexican music than any other solo artist in history — surpassing even Vicente Fernández. His brother Kevin Ortiz also achieved success as a regional Mexican singer. On March 20, 2011, Ortiz survived an ambush in Mexico that left his cousin and business manager dead.
