About Hampton Pirates Football

The Hampton Pirates football team has represented Hampton University, an HBCU (one of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities) on the gridiron since way back in 1902, bringing home 7 national Black College football championships including an incredible threepeat of successive victories in 2004, 2005, and 2006. The Pirates once competed at the NCAA Division II level but joined NCAA Division I-AA (now FCS) in 1995, where many fans feared they might struggle to compete. While they have certainly had to battle hard to compete in their conference at that level, the team has nonetheless maintained a fairly respectable record since, though they have struggled to make inroads in the playoffs, having been there on just five occasions with a record of 0-5. Nevertheless, the Pirates have won 6 conference titles since the big switch to Division I in 1995, topping the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. The team now plays its games within the CAA Football Conference, with no titles yet to show for it. 2023 was not a very successful season for the Pirates, unfortunately, with a below .500 finish of 5-6, but Pirates fans are filled with hope that they will be back stronger in 2024. With their track record of producing talented players like Jamal Brooks, Marcus Dixon, Jerome Mathis, and many others who have gone on to play (and coach) in the NFL, the Pirates should be confident that they can improve in the years to come. The Hampton Pirates have two major rivalries with other HBCUs, including the Battle of the Bay with local rivals the Norfolk State Spartans and the Real HU against the Howard Bison (also a local rivalry).
