Japanese Breakfast is an American indie pop project led by singer-songwriter Michelle Zauner, formed in Philadelphia in 2013. The project blends indie rock, dream pop, and experimental sounds, creating music that is both emotionally intimate and sonically rich. The project gained widespread recognition with albums Psychopomp (2016), Soft Sounds from Another Planet (2017), and Jubilee (2021), the latter earning two Grammy nominations for Best New Artist and Best Alternative Music Album. In 2025, Japanese Breakfast released their fourth album, For Melancholy Brunettes (& Sad Women). Their music explores themes of grief, identity, love, and joy, shaped in part by Zauner's Korean American heritage. Zauner is also celebrated for her 2021 bestselling memoir Crying in H Mart, which spent 60 weeks on the New York Times nonfiction list. Japanese Breakfast has become a leading voice in modern indie music, connecting deeply with listeners through vulnerability and creativity.
