The Congress is an American rock band from Richmond, Virginia, formed in Denver, Colorado in 2009 by guitarist and vocalist Scott Lane and bassist and vocalist Jonathan Meadows — childhood friends who first met at age nineteen in Richmond, where Meadows fronted a band called The Grove with a residency at the Cary Street Cafe. After Lane relocated to Denver in 2008 and persuaded Meadows to follow in 2009, the two found their rhythm section in drummer Damon Scott and bassist Dwight Thompson, playing their first official show in September of that year. Their sound is a dynamic blend of rock 'n' roll, old-school soul, classic country, and searing psychedelia — built around Meadows' tenor voice and a shared reverence for the warm, loose feel of 1960s and 1970s recordings. They released their debut full-length Whatever You Want, followed by their self-titled EP and The Loft Tapes, before releasing their sophomore album The Game (September 9, 2016, American Paradox Records), recorded primarily at Denver's Macy Sound Studio with mixing by Adrian Olsen. The band has toured with Lake Street Dive, the Tedeschi-Trucks Band, and Hard Working Americans. They are represented by United Talent Agency and continue to perform nationally.
