Lisa Lisa, born Lisa Velez, is a singer who rose to fame in the 1980s. At the time, she was one of three in the band Lisa Lisa and the Cult Jam. Lisa grew up in Hell’s Kitchen in New York City as one of ten children. She spoke Spanish at home and English at school. She started singing in church and became part of a traveling singing group at school. She auditioned for the Brooklyn production team Full Force and became a part of the band and released a single. When the group’s success started to decline, she went solo and released her own debut in 1994. She released another album in 2009 as a comeback and in 2019, she signed with Snoop Dogg’s Army. There is a biopic of her life being made by Lifetime.
