Ravi Coltrane Quartet is the working ensemble of Ravi Coltrane, an American jazz saxophonist, bandleader, and composer born on August 6, 1965, on Long Island, New York — the second son of legendary saxophonist John Coltrane and jazz harpist and pianist Alice Coltrane, and a first cousin once removed of electronic music producer Flying Lotus. He was named after Indian sitarist Ravi Shankar. After his father's death in 1967, the family relocated to Los Angeles, where Ravi grew up immersed in music and spirituality. He began on clarinet in middle school before switching to tenor and soprano saxophone in high school, studying at California Institute of the Arts in 1986. Moving to New York in 1991, he apprenticed with Elvin Jones — the storied drummer of his father's classic quartet — and subsequently worked as a sideman with Steve Coleman, Rashied Ali, Jack DeJohnette, Kenny Barron, and others, appearing on over thirty recordings in the 1990s. He made his debut as a bandleader with Moving Pictures (1998), followed by Mad 6 (2003), In Flux (2005) — which earned a Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Instrumental Solo — Blending Times (2009), and Spirit Fiction (2012, Blue Note Records). He was the driving force behind Alice Coltrane's return to recording after a 26-year hiatus, producing and playing on Translinear Light (2004, Impulse!). He co-founded independent label RKM Music, oversees reissues of his parents' recordings, and chairs the preservation of the John Coltrane Home in Dix Hills, Long Island.
