The Black Crowes is an American blues-oriented rock band that came together in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1984. The two brothers, Chris Robinson and Rich Robinson, founded the group during their time at Walton High School starting the band with the name Mr. Crowe’s Garden. The band got a deal to do a demo for A&M Records in 1987, thanks to their manager at the time, Dave Macias. The first demo by the band was done in Carrboro, North Carolina, featuring Jeff Sullivan on drums. Over time the recordings included Steve Gorman, who later joined the band officially. The lineup of the band changed slightly by 1988, but they continued playing at different spots in New York City and they caught the attention of George Drakoulias in 1989, who signed them up with Def American. After the signing they changed their name officially to The Black Crowes.
Even though they had an altercation with Miller Beer in 1991, the band did not miss a moment, launching their own tour and joining the Monsters of Rock in Europe, and they got to share stages with legends like Metallica, Jimmy Page, Tom Petty, Lenny Kravitz, and AC/DC.
But in 2006 they went through some changes, with Eddie Harsch and Marc Ford leaving the band and then replaced by Rob Clores and Paul Stacey. Clores was later replaced by Adam MacDougall in 2007. Meanwhile, Paul Stacey's role was also temporary because Luther Dickinson took over guitar duties. The band then released Warpaint in 2008, with Paul Stacey staying as the producer. In 2015, Rich Robinson announced the band’s final breakup after their album Croweology; the album was bittersweet for the fans as it was honored with a farewell tour following the band’s long breakup.
After the breakup, members pursued other projects. Chris Robinson formed the Chris Robinson Brotherhood and As the Crow Flies, while Rich Robinson focused on his solo career and The Magpie Salute. Steve Gorman continued with Trigger Hippy and wrote a memoir. This year, they have released the album Happiness Bastards.
The Black Crowes has sold over 18 million albums, earning them the title The Most Rock N' Roll Rock N' Roll Band In The World. Their debut album, Shake Your Money Maker has popular hits like Hard to Handle and She Talks To Angels. While their other album, The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion hit number one on the Billboard 200 in 1992, earning double platinum like their debut album. Throughout the ‘90s, the band continued their success by releasing albums like Amorica, Three Snakes and One Charm, and By Your Side. Another interesting fact about The Black Crowes is that the band earned the number 92 spot on VH1’s 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock.
Their reunion in 2019 created anticipation for a tour featuring their debut album, but it got postponed to 2021 due to the pandemic. Then, in 2022, the band dropped the EP 1972, followed by the live album Shake Your Moneymaker Live in 2023.
In 2024, the band will be taking on stages, as they have announced their tour in support of their new album, Happiness Bastard. The Black Crowes dropped the album on March 15, 2024, and the album is the band’s first record of new music in over 13 years. The tour will be across 35 cities in Europe and North America, kicking off with a Nashville show at the famous Grand Ole Opry House on the 2nd of April, 2024. The band plans to wrap up the tour by June 9, 2024, with a performance at the Stone & Music Festival in Spain.
The band will also be starting a tour with the theme The Aerosmith, which will begin on September 20, 2024 at the PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The tour will probably end on the 26th of February 2025. There might be further tour dates, and you can always stay updated on TicketX.
