It must have seemed slightly implausible to music fans in 1994 when ex-Nirvana drummer David Grohl founded the Foo Fighters and became the group’s lead vocalist and guitarist. Grohl had originally planned to sing, play all instruments, and release songs anonymously under the band name Foo Fighters (a slang term for unidentified flying objects used by pilots during World War II), never thinking that this would soon morph into the band that would be his life’s work (he later remarked that Foo Fighters was “the stupidest f***ing band name in the world”). While the band drew some influence from Nirvana initially, particularly alternations between loud and soft verses within single songs, their style has morphed and changed in the nearly three decades since they began pumping out the hits. Concert-goers can therefore expect some surprises at Foo Fighters interspersed with pleasing doses of nostalgia.
