Since their emergence in 2001, The Killers, known commonly as eclectic and anthemic rockers, have blossomed into one of the biggest bands not only in the United States but on the planet in general.
Following some line-up shifting, the group settled for its current form in 2002, with Brandon Flowers as keyboard and vocal lead, Dave Keuning as lead guitarist, Mark Stoermer on bass guitar, and Ronne Vannucci Jr. as drummer.
In hindsight, the band was formed when Brandon Flowers, upon being kicked out of an erstwhile Blush Response, had an epiphany at an Oasis concert. It was there he realized that fronting for a rock band was his life’s calling. Latching on to the eureka moment, he went on a search for musicians with similar mindsets. Along these lines, he discovered his compadres and started writing music with them.
With a shared love for music, Brandon Flowers and Dave Keuning crossed paths in the bustling streets of Sin City, Las Vegas, where they started a sojourn that would reshape the modern rock landscape. As Mark Stoermer and Ronnie Vannucci Jr. joined their ranks, the band was born in the world of alternative rock. After forming the group, they went against many odds.
Grittily determined they started out with playing gigs at smoky bars and holding rehearsals in the unforgiving heat of deserts. Nonetheless, it was their demos that caught the ear of music executives. These works sparked a bidding war that ultimately drew them closer to signing to a record label for the first time in their band’s history.
Mildly fast-forward to 2004, the Killers put out their maiden album, Hot Fuss, in a release that had the makings of a musical revolution. Thanks to infectious hooks, pulsating rhythms, and originality, tracks such as Mr Brightside and Somebody Told Me became generational anthems and shot the band onto the international scene. Flukeless, the album’s success showcased The Killers’ talent and creativity.
However, the run had only started. The band pushed their sound’s boundaries by infusing elements from new wave, synth-pop, and Americana. From the electro-pop sensibilities of Day & Age to the anthemic stadium rave of Sam’s Town, The Killers’ evolved boldly and unapologetically as contemporary, slightly controversial artists.
The Killers have headlined scores of major shows, including a stadium concert in Manchester, an event which highlighted how much of a sensation they are in the UK. With time, it became evident that their style was influenced by iconoclastic bands like Depeche Mode, New Order, and The Smiths. They often featured classics from these groups and [even] linked up with Johnny Marr.
In celebration of their two-decade legacy, the band took up residency in Las Vegas, along which line they Philly performed Hot Fuss. Settling in the city is a way to pay homage to their enduring pull-throughs and prove their profound dent on generational rock music.
While being honored with Grammy nominations, BRIT Awards, and MTV Europe Music Awards, the band’s albums have topped worldwide charts and sold millions of copies. Yet, their greatest achievement has to be their enduring legacy as rock icons.
Some of the band’s best-ever songs include:
Mr. Brightside
Somebody Told Me
When You Were Young
Human
Runaways
The Man
Land of the Free
Caution
My Own Soul's Warning
Dustland" (featuring Bruce Springsteen)
The band has let the word out on their tour for 2024, themed Rebel Diamonds. The tour is going to be a celebratory series of arena shows in Ireland and the United Kingdom, interestingly excluding North America. These activities have been put together to celebrate the band’s Rebel Diamonds compilation and will mark the group’s 20 years of hit songs.
