The Waterboys are a rock band formed in 1983 in London by Scottish musician and songwriter Mike Scott — born December 14, 1958, in Edinburgh — the group's sole constant member. Scott had previously fronted Edinburgh band Another Pretty Face and briefly formed a duo, The Red and the Black, with saxophonist Anthony Thistlethwaite before placing a newspaper advertisement to recruit musicians and founding The Waterboys. Their early sound — dubbed "The Big Music" after a song on their second album A Pagan Place (1984) — combined sweeping rock with classical trumpet, jazz saxophone, and keyboards, described by Rolling Stone as "an impressive mixture of rock music and Celtic ruralism." After Wallinger departed to form World Party, Scott relocated to Ireland where fiddler Steve Wickham transformed the band toward Irish traditional music, resulting in Fisherman's Blues (1988). The band dissolved in 1993 and reformed in 2000, releasing sixteen studio albums in total — including An Appointment with Mr. Yeats (2011) and Life, Death and Dennis Hopper (2025, Sun Records). Their songs frequently explore spirituality and the literary symbolism of William Blake and W.B. Yeats.
