Death Cab for Cutie is an American indie rock band formed in Bellingham, Washington, in 1997, originally as a solo project by singer-songwriter Ben Gibbard. The band's current lineup consists of Gibbard on vocals and guitar, Nick Harmer on bass, Dave Depper on guitar, Zac Rae on keyboards, and Jason McGerr on drums. Known for their melodic, introspective sound blending indie rock, indie pop, and alternative rock, they gained widespread recognition with their 2003 album Transatlanticism, which was featured prominently on the TV series The O.C. Their major-label debut Plans (2005), released on Atlantic Records, went platinum and produced the hit singles "Soul Meets Body" and "I Will Follow You into the Dark." Their 2008 album Narrow Stairs debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. Described as one of the definitive indie bands of the 2000s and 2010s, the band has received multiple Grammy Award nominations throughout their career.
