About Tortoise

Tortoise is a post-rock band that formed in 1990. They have an eclectic style that influenced the post-rock genre and included elements of dub, minimal music, jazz, electronica, krautrock, and other genres. The Chicago, Illinois-based band helped to create the Chicago school of post-rock, which was on the rise in the 90s. The group started to form in the 80s when a bassist and drummer got together to create a freelance rhythm section. They added more members and became Tortoise, which released its first single in 1993. A year later, their self-titled debut album came out. The album was instrumental and mid-tempo, but got critical praise for its unique instrumentation. Critics said they released experimental rock, but on an evocative, beautiful level. Their 1998 release, TNT, one of their most popular, was also their most jazz-inflected album. Members of the band have had many side projects over the years, including other bands and albums.
