Remarkably, the student body approved the team via a vote despite a consequent effect on student fees! The 49ers actually took their name based on the university’s previous brief flirtation with college football from 1946-48, with the idea that the team was continuing the original team’s unfinished business. The 49ers kicked off their first season in 2013 as an independent, joining Conference USA in 2015, where they finished 4th on three occasions, appearing (but losing) in the Bahamas Bowl in 2019. 2023 saw the 49ers join the more competitive American Athletic Conference (AAC) and struggle to a 3-9 finish.
