Home Teams: Virginia Tech Hokies (NCAA College Football)
Situated on the campus of Virginia Tech, Lane Stadium has been home of the Virginia Tech Hokies football team ever since it first opened in 1965. Lane Stadium has been ranked by ESPN as the second most intimidating stadium in the NCAA to visit for opposing teams and is often claimed to be the loudest college football stadium in the nation when it is packed with 65,000 full-throated Hokies fans. Thanks to this massive home field advantage, the Hokies have had periodic success, winning 11 conference titles as well as 14 Bowl games (14-21 overall Bowl record), though they tend to finish mid-conference most seasons. What sets the team apart is the strong sense of tradition that surrounds it at Virginia Tech, which has quite the impressive buildup to games even by American college football standards. For the Homecoming Game (first home game of each season), an event called the Game Ball Run takes place where the game ball is jogged around campus for 100 miles prior to the huge Homecoming Game Spirit Rally. On the day of the game, the Highty-Tighties marching band and Hokie Bird mascot lead the team and its coaches along the Hokie Walk to the stadium, cheered by fans all along the way, and there is a carnival called Hokie Village outside the stadium, along with plenty of places for tailgating parties. Once everyone is inside the stadium, the Highty-Tighties put on a show on the field where they spell out the team’s name with their formations, and the huge Skipper cannon fires off a blast after the national anthem has been played. The team enter the field to the thrumming chords of Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” with each player touching the Hokie Stone for good luck on the way. During the game, fans engage in all sorts of hijinx to distract opposition players, jangling their keys on “key plays” for the opposition or turkey gobbling (in honor of the real turkeys that were once the team’s mascots). Even Growley, the Hokies dog mascot, can often be seen chewing on a miniature version of the other team’s mascot. When the Hokies score, mayhem breaks loose. Freshmen do pushups on each others’ shoulders, girls are tossed up into the air, people with flags run across the field, Skipper the cannon blasts off again, and the Hokie Bird does a bench press for each point scored. Unlike many other football stadiums, Lane Stadium is used for home football games and does not generally host concerts or other such events. On game days, turning up hungry to Lane Stadium hungry is no problem, with everything from Bavarian pretzels to Hokie Smokin’ BBQ to footlong hotdogs on the menu, plus plenty of nice cold beer. For Hokies merchandise, the kiosks and shops inside Lane Stadium or around campus will have anything you could possibly want.
