Home Teams: Indianapolis Colts (NFL)
Lucas Oil Stadium opened in 2008 as the new home of the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts, who had played previously at the RCA Dome since arriving in Indianapolis from Baltimore in 1984. The stadium features an attractive red-brick design similar to that of nearby Gainbridge Fieldhouse, home of the NBA’s Indiana Pacers (the two venues are less than 5 minutes by car from one another), as well as a retractable roof and retractable window that can both be opened in fair weather. The 2008 move to the new stadium was spurred on by the Colts’ performance in the previous season, when the team finally got across the line for the first time since moving to Indianapolis by winning Super Bowl XLI with a 29-17 victory over the Chicago Bears. Despite Indianapolis being a relatively small city located quite some distance from other urban centers (the closest being Cincinnati at over 100 miles away), it is nonetheless a huge sports town, with both the Colts and Pacers packing their respective stadiums on a regular basis. As well as all regular season and playoff Colts home games, Lucas Oil Stadium hosts a full calendar of NCAA college football and basketball games, concerts, and marching band competitions. It also hosted the Super Bowl (Super Bowl XLVI in 2012). If you show up hungry, Lucas Oil Stadium has plenty of tasty snacks on the menu, including soft pretzels, Cuban sandwiches, footlong hot dogs, and more. Team and event merchandise, much of it featuring the Eagles’ iconic horseshoe logo, can be found in the stadium’s many kiosks and shops.
