Beginning in the 1880s, the Virginia Cavaliers football team rapidly emerged as an early power in the American South, dominating the late years of the 19th century and early years of the 20th century. By 1915, the Cavaliers had consistently finished with winning records each season, claimed three conference titles, and even defeated the (at the time) all-mighty University of Yale from the (at the time) more established football regions up in the North. Sadly, it would be downhill from then on, with the Cavaliers heading into a steep decline in which losing records were the norm. After many years as an Independent, the team joined the Atlantic Coast Conference in 1954, but went on to spend many years in the basement of that conference, struggling to scrape together any wins at all. The 1980s and 1990s finally brought better times under head coach George Welsh, who led the Cavaliers to two conference titles and two Peach Bowl victories (though the team’s overall Bowl game record, 8-13, is less than impressive). In the years since, brief surges of encouraging results have been followed by disappointment.

Virginia Cavaliers Rivalries

The Virginia Cavaliers have a deep-seated in-state rivalry with the Virginia Tech Hokies that can be traced back nearly 130 years. The two teams have contested the Commonwealth Cup each year since 1970. The Cavaliers broke a 15-year losing streak in the game in 2019, beating the Hokies 39-30 to earn a spot in the Orange Bowl (which they unfortunately lost). The Cavaliers are also one half of the “South’s Oldest Rivalry” against the North Carolina Tar Heels, which stems back to the early days of football when these two teams dominated football in the South. Formerly, this game was always played on Thanksgiving Day. The Cavaliers other two main rivals are the Florida State Seminoles and Maryland Terrapins

Are Virginia Cavaliers football games exciting?

Despite their tendency to end up on the wrong end of results more often than not, the Virginia Cavaliers still inspire feverish loyalty from their legions of fans who fill the stands of Scott Stadium for every game. It was long a tradition for men to wear coats and ties and for women to wear sundresses to football game at the University of Virginia, but nowadays many prefer to come in more casual attire, clad in the team’s main color of orange (however, many people in coats, ties, and sundresses can still be seen at any home game). The excitement at a Cavaliers game really revs up when, just prior to the kickoff, a mounted cavalier in full regalia charges across the field on his noble steed (a tradition that was happily reinstated after the return of natural grass to the stadium, as horses cannot ride on artificial turf). Football games at Scott Stadium are always a party; come ready to eat and drink during tailgating in the buildup to kickoff. Get your Virginia Cavaliers football tickets now from TicketX!
