Been Stellar are an American indie rock and post-punk band based in New York City, formed in 2017 when high school friends Sam Slocum (vocals) and Skyler Knapp (guitar) — who met on the cross-country team in Michigan, bonding over their band t-shirts — moved to New York City to attend NYU as freshmen. There they met the rest of their current lineup: guitarist Nando Dale (originally from Brazil), bassist Nico Brunstein, and drummer Laila Wayans. The band is named after actor Ben Stiller. Drawing from the rich traditions of New York rock — The Velvet Underground, Television, Sonic Youth, Interpol, The Strokes — alongside shoegaze acts like My Bloody Valentine and The Jesus and Mary Chain, and influences like Iceage, Radiohead, and the Smashing Pumpkins, their sound fuses post-punk urgency with shoegaze texture and alternative rock introspection. After building an early following through DIY performances in Brooklyn venues and releasing their debut self-titled EP via British indie label So Young Records in 2022 — which landed on several year-end best-of lists — the band signed with London's Dirty Hit Records, home of The 1975 and Beabadoobee. They toured Europe with The 1975 and supported Fontaines D.C. and Shame before releasing their debut album Scream from New York, NY on June 21, 2024, produced by Dan Carey (Fontaines D.C., Wet Leg, black midi). The album debuted at number 44 on the UK Physical Albums Chart and was praised as an outstanding indie rock debut. In 2025 the band released the single "Breakaway" and announced further touring.
