About Cartel

Cartel are an American pop punk band from Conyers, Georgia, formed in 2003. The current lineup consists of vocalist/guitarist Will Pugh, lead guitarist Joseph Pepper, and rhythm guitarist Nic Hudson — three friends who met at Heritage High School in Rockdale County and bonded over hardcore punk and rock music before officially forming Cartel while attending Georgia State University. After signing with The Militia Group and releasing EP The Ransom, the band released their debut full-length Chroma in September 2005 — recorded at Tree Sound Studios in Norcross, Georgia — powered by the melodic hits "Honestly" and "Say Anything (Else)," which placed the band on Alternative Press's 2005 "Bands You Need to Know" list. Chroma has since sold more than 250,000 copies and been hailed by Rock Sound and Loudwire as one of the greatest pop punk records of all time. In April 2006, Cartel signed with Epic Records. In 2007, the band was featured on MTV's Band in a Bubble — a live broadcast experiment in which they were given 20 days inside a sealed habitat to write and record their self-titled second album, which debuted in the top 20. Cycles (2009) and the self-released Collider (2013) followed, along with acoustic release Bare Essentials (2015). The band released new singles "17" and "The End" in 2022 — their first new music in nine years — while supporting Dashboard Confessional on the Hello Gone Days tour. In 2025, Cartel re-recorded Chroma in its entirety for its 20th anniversary, releasing the updated version on September 12, 2025, via Field Day Records, citing Taylor Swift's re-recording strategy as partial inspiration.
