Cimafunk, full name Erik Alejandro Iglesias Rodríguez is a Cuban musician who specializes in funk, hip-hop, and Cuban/Afro-Caribbean music. He sang in church as a child, though he planned to become a doctor like other family members. He attended medical school for two years but then moved to Havana to pursue music in 2010. He became a session arranger and producer and even joined the band Interactivo from 2014-2016. When he left, he grabbed the professional name Cimafunk, which references Cimarrons, escaped clubs who created communities in Cuba. His first self-released album came out in 2017 followed by a single the next year. He was named one of the 10 Latin Artists to Watch in 2019 and gained huge popularity during his U.S. and European tour that year.
