About Garbage

Garbage is an American alternative rock band formed in Madison, Wisconsin, in 1993, consisting of Scottish vocalist Shirley Manson and American musicians Duke Erikson (guitar, bass, keyboards), Steve Marker (guitar, keyboards), and Butch Vig (drums, production). The band formed at Smart Studios — founded by Vig and Marker — after Vig's landmark production work on Nirvana's Nevermind (1991) and remix projects for U2, Depeche Mode, and Nine Inch Nails. Their name reportedly came from a friend describing their early demo as sounding "like garbage." Manson joined in August 1994 after Marker spotted her in a video for her band Angelfish. Their self-titled debut (1995) sold over four million copies and was certified double platinum in the UK, US, and Australia, spawning the hits "Stupid Girl" and "Only Happy When It Rains." Version 2.0 (1998) topped the UK Albums Chart and earned two Grammy nominations. They also recorded the theme to the James Bond film The World Is Not Enough (1999). The band has sold over 17 million albums worldwide and remains active today.
