Israel Houghton is an American contemporary Christian music singer, songwriter, producer, worship leader, and multi-instrumentalist born on May 19, 1971, in Oceanside, California, to a white mother and Jamaican father. Devoted to worship ministry full-time by age eighteen, he founded New Breed Ministries in 1995 alongside his then-wife Meleasa and a group of world-class musicians and singers with the explicit goal of overcoming cultural and denominational barriers. His debut solo releases Whisper It Loud and Way of the World (both 1997) launched his recording career, and New Season (2001) marked Israel & New Breed's debut on Sony. Known for his dynamic cross-cultural sound fusing gospel, jazz, rock, reggae, and Latin rhythms, his signature worship anthems include "Friend of God," "You Are Good," "Again I Say Rejoice," and "Jesus at the Center." He served as worship leader at Lakewood Church in Houston — the largest church in America — for over a decade. His album Alive in South Africa (2005) was recorded before 8,000 attendees in Cape Town, and Covered: Alive in Asia (2014) won the Grammy Award for Best Gospel Album. He married singer and television personality Adrienne Bailon in Paris on November 11, 2016. In May 2025 he released the collaborative album Magnificent with Philippa Hanna on Integrity Music.
