The Kansas State Wildcats football team have not always been a very good football team. Overall, the Wildcats have a losing record, with an unenviable all-time win percentage of .461. And yet if success could be measured in improvement, rather than consistent high performance, the Kansas State Wildcats have achieved something quite remarkable, particularly between 1989 to 2018 under legendary coach Bill Snyder, for whom the team’s stadium is named. Though it took Snyder some time to turn the Wildcats football (they went 1-10 in his first season), he eventually led the team to a string of first place finishes in their extremely competitive conference, as well as appearances in a long list of Bowl games (prior to Snyder, the Wildcats had only appeared in one Bowl game in their entire history!). The Wildcats went on to claim a Copper Bowl, 3 Holiday Bowls, a Fiesta Bowl, a Cotton Bowl, and several others in those years, thrilling their fans with a whole new winning attitude that made people proud of the school and state. Snyder retired in 2018 at the age of 77 with a win percentage of .617. "He's not the coach of the year,” said a fellow Hall of Fame coach of Snyder. “He's not the coach of the decade. He's the coach of the century." Filling such illustrious shoes would be no easy task for anyone, but current boss Chris Klieman has already impressed in his first five years in charge, winning the Big 12 Conference title in 2022 as well as two Bowl games. Hopes are high among Kansas State Wildcats fans young and old that their team will continue to be one of the rising lights of college football in 2024 and the years to come.
Kansas State Wildcats football games are known for drawing in huge crowds of students, alumni, and general fans from across the football-mad state of Kansas. While this helps to create a superb game day atmosphere at Bill Snyder Family Stadium, it can also make Kansas State Wildcats tickets difficult to procure, particularly for conference deciders, rivalry matchups (see below), and Bowl games, as they often sell out well in advance. The Kansas State Wildcats have a huge in-state rivalry with the Kansas Jayhawks, though it is rather humorous as a rivalry in that the two teams never seem to be good at the same time! The teams have one of the longest continuous annual series (known as the Governor’s Cup) in all of college football, dating back to 1902. As of 2023, the Jayhawks lead the series 64–52–5, so it will take the Wildcats some time if they wish to claw that record back to their side. The Kansas State Wildcats also have strong rivalries with the Colorado Buffaloes, Iowa State Cyclones, and Nebraska Cornhuskers.
Kansas State Wildcats football games are huge events, with fans descending on the stadium from all around draped in their Royal Purple (the team’s official color) and singing the university’s fight song “Wildcat Victory” at the tops of their lungs. Whenever there is a Wildcats first down, the crowd all shouts "Good for a Wildcat first down” in unison. Prior to kickoff, fans gather for hours (or even days) to enjoy food and drinks in tailgating parties, building up the excitement before entering the stadium.
