Maxwell, full name Gerald Maxwell Rivera, is a singer, songwriter, and record producer who released his debut studio album in 1996. The album spawned hit singles and received critical acclaim. His subsequent hits helped popularize neo soul for mainstream audiences in the 90s. Both his second and third albums went platinum, and his 1999 single “Fortunate” appeared on the film Life soundtrack. Maxwell took an 8-year break, then returned with his fourth album, which peaked the charts and won two Grammy Awards. His fifth album came out in 2016. Throughout his career, he has won three Grammy Awards and two NAACP Image Awards, among others. Maxwell grew up in Brooklyn, New York, in the East New York neighborhood. His mother was Haitian, and his father, who died in a plane crash in the late 70s, was Puerto Rican. He started composing music at 17 after receiving an inexpensive Casio keyboard from a friend.
