The Missouri Tigers football team has been representing the University of Missouri, best known as Mizzou, on the gridiron since 1890. The team has been one of the more successful teams in their conference, particularly in the past couple of decades after Gary Pinkel took over the head coaching role in 2001 and led the Tigers to five conference titles as well as victories in the Cotton Bowl (twice), Alamo Bowl, and Citrus Bowl. Faurot Field, named for another long-time head coach of the team, Don Faurot, is known locally as “The Zou,” taken from the Mizzou nickname for the university. This has become a popular stadium call and response chant, involving one group of fans bellowing “MIZ” followed by another responding “ZOU!” and so on back and forth, progressively growing louder and louder until everyone runs out of breath. The grassy knoll at the north end of the stadium is often filled with fans around the iconic giant white M, made of small whitewashed rocks (when members of the football team graduate, they are each allowed to take one rock from the M as a keepsake to remind them of their time playing for the Tigers). Fans pack tightly into the stadium for every home game, clad in black and gold, singing the fight song “Every True Son, Fight Tiger,” and cheering on beloved mascot Truman the Tiger as he spins his tail and bounces around the field. Many fans drive to Columbia from far and wide to immerse themselves in the buildup to the game, with tailgating and pep rallies being the big traditions here.
The Missouri Tigers’s longest-standing rivalry is probably with the Oklahoma Sooners. The teams are set to renew hostilities in 2024 as they will be in the same conference again for the first time in many years. The Tigers also have divisional rivalries with the Arkansas Razorbacks and South Carolina Gamecocks, as well as historic rivalries with the Kansas Jayhawks, Illinois Fighting Illini , Iowa State Cyclones, and Nebraska Cornhuskers.
With so much exciting buildup and enthralling on-field action, the Missouri Tigers are a big draw in Missouri, pulling in fans from all across the state and beyond. Students, faculty, alumni, and others don their gold and black to come support the team, making every home game a big event. The team’s popularity can make tickets difficult to get your hands on, however, especially for Bowl games, title deciders, or matches against rival schools (see above).
