The Romantics are an American power pop and new wave rock band formed on Valentine's Day, February 14, 1977, in Detroit, Michigan, by vocalist and rhythm guitarist Wally Palmar, lead guitarist Mike Skill, bassist Rich Cole, and drummer Jimmy Marinos. Drawing on the British Invasion, Motown R&B, Detroit garage rock, and the MC5 and the Stooges, the band developed a hook-driven power pop sound built on three-minute songs with ringing guitars, strong harmonies, and matching outfits. After releasing early singles on local labels and Bomp! Records, they signed with Nemperor Records in 1979 and released their self-titled debut album in 1980, featuring "What I Like About You." Their fourth album In Heat (1983) was their commercial breakthrough, going platinum and yielding "Talking in Your Sleep," which peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 and number one on the Hot Dance Club Play chart. After a lengthy legal dispute with their former management — which prevented them from recording for most of the 1990s — they returned with 61/49 in 2003 and have continued touring. "What I Like About You" and "Talking in Your Sleep" remain enduring radio staples.
