The UNLV Rebels football team has represented the University of Nevada, Las Vegas since 1968, but only moved into Division 1 top tier football in 1978. The Rebels have played in the Mountain West Conference since 1999. The team has spent many seasons as the doormats of their conference, recording many losing seasons throughout their history (their overall win percentage is a dismal .396), but there have been occasional encouraging surges. In fact, 2023 was one of the team’s best seasons to date, when they finished 9-3 for a joint 1st place finish overall. UNLV fans are a dedicated bunch, packing the stands with scarlet and gray in their thousands to sing “Win With The Rebels” and cheer on their team. The Rebels also now play their home games in Las Vegas’s spectacular Allegiant Stadium, home to the NFL’s Las Vegas Raiders, which is a big draw for the team as well, so the future is looking up.
The UNLV Rebels have a strong state rivalry with the Nevada Wolf Pack (winner gets the Fremont Cannon) and a recent (rather manufactured, but hey, it’s Vegas) rivalry against the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors (The Battle for the Golden Pineapple).
