Home Teams: Texas San Antonio Roadrunners (NCAA College Football)
The Alamodome is a bit of a strange facility, built as it was in 1993 with the aim of luring a professional football franchise to San Antonio Spurs but never succeeding in doing so, at least not on a permanent basis. The stadium has thus played host to a long list of odd tenants, including the San Antonio Spurs of the NBA from 199-2002, though they ultimately built a new stadium, the Frost Bank Center, that was more conducive to viewing their sport. And an NFL team, the New Orleans Saints, actually did stop by and play the better part of a season in the Alamodome, though this was an emergency measure caused by the destruction of their home stadium, the Caesars Superdome, as well as much of the city around it. Other tenants have been markedly less well-known (the Talons, the Commanders, the Brahmas). The Alamodome even briefly trialed a Canadian Football League team, the San Antonio Texans, despite the Canadian border being over 2000 miles away! The team that has stuck around the longest, and seems the likeliest to do so going forward, is the Texas San Antonio Roadrunners football team, who represent the University of Texas at San Antonio in Division NCAA college football. The Roadrunners, who only came into existence in 2011, are one of the newest teams in the NCAA, but have had a relatively good start thus far, managing a winning record (84-75) and winning two conference titles in 2021 and 2022 in the Conference USA. Despite a move to the more prestigious American Athletic Conference (AAC) in 2023, the team fared quite well, going 9-4 in their debut season. Fans in San Antonio, starved for high level football, have flocked to the team in their droves, filling the oft-empty Alamodome stands with the blue, orange, and white of their team and plenty of enthusiastic singing. Along with Roadrunners games, the Alamodome has been put to a wide range of uses over the years, everything from graduation ceremonies and high school football championships to basketball, baseball, international soccer, NHL ice hockey, figure skating, boxing, conventions, pro wrestling, and religious events. The biopic Selena was even filmed in the Alamodome, which showed its acting range as a venue by masquerading as Houston’s famous Astrodome. Numerous large concerts and music festivals also take place at the Alamodome, with many of the world’s famous acts appearing on stage there. Visitors who show up to the Alamodome hungry will find plenty of tasty snacks, with everything from nachos to burgers to popcorn on the menu, as well as plenty of cold beer. For Roadrunners or event merchandise, head to any kiosk or shop inside the Alamodome.
