Busch Stadium Events

Busch Stadium may have just opened in 2006, but its name is a holdover from the past two stadiums that the St. Louis Cardinals have called home as a tribute to their long-time owner Gussie Busch (the brewing tycoon who established Budweiser and Anheuser-Busch). The Cardinals had a strong team at the time, led by the irrepressible Albert Pujols and always dependable David Eckstein, but had lost in the World Series in 2004 to the Boston Red Sox and in the NLCS to the Houston Astros in 2005. The new stadium seemed to give the Cards that extra push they needed, as huge crowds at the new Busch Stadium cheered the team on as they only just barely squeaked into the playoffs, but then beat the San Diego Padres in four and squeezed past the New York Mets in seven to set up a showdown with the Detroit Tigers in the World Series. Both teams* were desperate to win, with the Tigers not having won a title since 1984 and the Cards since 1982, but it was the team from St. Louis that would prevail, with pitcher Adam Wainwright sealing the deal in the 9th inning of Game Five by blanking the Tigers in front of the home crowd to christen Busch Stadium with an unlikely World Series triumph. The Cardinals won it all again in 2011 in a seven-game thriller over the Texas Rangers and narrowly lost out to the Red Sox in 2013. Busch Stadium itself is a member of the new retro style that became popular across MLB from the late 1990s onward, sporting an impressive red-brick facade as well as an open layout that provides spectacular views of downtown St. Louis. To see the stadium packed with fans in their red hats and jerseys beneath a blue Missouri sky or under the lights for a night game is a truly enchanting sight to behold. Enter the stadium through Gate 3 if you can, as the gate possesses a bridge built to resemble the Eads Bridge in St. Louis that connects Missouri to Illinois across the Mississippi River. As well as all regular season and playoff Cardinals home games, Busch Stadium often hosts concerts and international soccer games, as well as college and high school baseball on occasion. Turning up at Busch Stadium on an empty stomach will never be an issue, with all kinds of scrumptious snacks such as St. Louis BBQ, Nashville hot chicken sandwiches, and Mission Taco Joint tacos on the menu. And in a stadium named for a man who sold more beer than almost anyone in history, a cold one is never hard to find. Kiosks and shops throughout Busch Stadium sell team and event merchandise, much of it emblazoned with the iconic Cardinals logo and bright red colors.

*This was the third time these two teams had met in the World Series, previously clashing in 1934, when the Cardinals won, and 1968, which went the way of the Tigers. Both series went the full distance to Game Seven.
