George M. Steinbrenner Field

Capacity: 11,026

Opening date: 1st March 1996

Address: 1 Steinbrenner Dr, Tampa, FL 33614, United States

Influenced by the Yankee Stadium’s design, the George M. Steinbrenner Field was incepted in 1996, ever since which it has been spring training forte to the New York Yankees. The facility is also the home field for the Tampa Tarpons (formerly Tampa Yankees), which is the Advanced A Affiliate of the organization.

Boasting a capacity of 11,076 and stand-only room areas, it is the biggest park one can find in the Grapefruit League. The Northwest Tampa-based playing field was tailored to match the dimensions of the 1976 remodeled Yankee Stadium.

When it opened in March 1996, it was then referred to as Legends Field. In 2008, it was renamed in honor of George Michael Steinbrenner, an American who owned and managed Major League Baseball's New York Yankees from 1973 until his passing in 2010. Steinbrenner had an impact on the Yankees and was instrumental in the stadium’s construction.

George M. Steinbrenner Field’s first official Spring Training game was held on March 1st. The event saw the Yankees go head to head with the Cleveland Indians; the former emerged winner with a 5-2 score. David Cone tossed the field’s first pitch while Bob Wickman recorded the win. To christen the joint, Phil Rizzuto tossed the ceremonial first pitch.

The ballpark’s seating sections are divided into four categories: reserved, field box, right field deck, and left field deck. In 2017, $40 million worth of renovations added an accessible main entrance, 5000 sq ft of retail space, a 9/11 Memorial, and an enlarged NY logo and replica monuments at the front.
