Lexington Opera House, nestled in downtown Lexington, Kentucky, is a historic theatre that opened its doors in 1887, designed by the acclaimed architect Oscar Cobb. This iconic venue, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is celebrated for its architectural and historical significance. With a seating capacity of 2,500, it's one of the few theatres built before 1900, still operational for live performances. Throughout its history, the Opera House has staged a diverse array of acts, including famous performers like Al Jolson and Harry Houdini, and it underwent significant transformations, including a period as a movie house. Despite challenges, such as a proposed demolition and a dilapidated state in the 1960s and 70s, community campaigns led to its purchase and restoration. Funded by local philanthropy, the Opera House was renovated in 1976, preserving its unique 19th-century charm while modernizing its facilities. Today, it continues to enchant 85,000 patrons annually as a premier destination for ballets, operas, Broadway tours, and more, maintaining its status as a cultural cornerstone in Lexington.
