Home Teams: Oklahoma Sooners (NCAA College Football)
Towering over the prairies that surround the small college town of Norman, Oklahoma Memorial Stadium (full name: Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium) celebrated its centennial in 2023 as the home of the Oklahoma Sooners football team. Also known as “The Palace on the Prairie,” this colossal stadium on the University of Oklahoma campus has undergone major renovations over the years, expanding and modernizing the facility into the gorgeous stadium that it is today. The current edition of the stadium is very attractive, with its north and west entrances having been redone to match the Cherokee Gothic style of many other buildings on campus. Much of the funding for these improvements was donated by the Gaylord family, hence the renaming of the facility in the 2000 (which had previously been named Owen Field in honor of former coach Bennie Owen. Sooners home games at Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium are raucous affairs, with the Pride of Oklahoma marching band revving up the crowd with elaborate choreography and renditions of the school fight song “Boomer Sooner.” Fans come dressed in the team’s colors of crimson and cream (essentially red and white) and sing other songs as well, such as “Fight for OKU,” the “OU Chant,” and their state song “Oklahoma.” Oklahoma’s current mascot is quite unique, not being an animal, human, or creature of any kind, but rather a horse-driven covered wagon of the type used to settle the Old West. Known as the Sooner Schooner, the wagon is pulled across the field by two white horses with a pair of students dressed in red at the reins. The Sooners themselves are a team to be very proud of, with a fantastic all-time win percentage of .725 (944-341-53), 7 claimed national titles, 11 unclaimed titles, 50 conference titles, and a Bowl record of 31-25-8. The team’s win percentage is the sixth best in NCAA football history. In general, Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium does not host events other than Sooners home games, such as concerts. Football fans who arrive at the stadium hungry will find plenty of tasty snacks, including fried ribeye sandwiches, Okie hoagies, and handmade fried pies, as well as lots of beer. Those looking to take home some Sooners merchandise will find it on sale at kiosks and shops in Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium as well as around campus.
